A Peaceful Goodbye Guide
Supporting you with compassion during one of the hardest decisions you may ever make.
When Is It Time?
Recognizing when a beloved pet is nearing the end of their journey is never easy. This guide was created to gently support you in identifying signs of suffering and understanding when euthanasia may be a kind and loving choice.
Common Signs Your Pet May Be Suffering:
📊 Physical Health:
- Chronic pain that can no longer be managed
- Labored or distressed breathing
- Incontinence or loss of bladder/bowel control
- Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
- Extreme weight loss or muscle wasting
- Inability to walk, stand, or move without distress
- Frequent infections or open wounds
- Seizures or tremors that are worsening
📊 Emotional Well-Being:
- Withdrawing from family members
- No longer engaging with favorite people or toys
- Anxiety, restlessness, or confusion
- Changes in sleep-wake cycle
- Persistent sadness or seeming "lost"
🩺 Gentle Questions to Reflect On:
- Are they having more bad days than good?
- Do they still enjoy any part of their day?
- Can I manage their pain and care needs at home?
- Is my decision based on their needs or my own emotions?
- Would I want to live in their condition if I couldn’t speak for myself?
💭 Tools to Help:
You can use a Quality of Life scale like H5M2 (Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, More good days than bad) to track your pet’s experience over time. We can provide this upon request.
💔 A Peaceful Goodbye
We understand the heartbreak involved in planning the final moments for your pet. Below are some ideas that can help make their goodbye gentle, respectful, and full of love.
- Choose a quiet, familiar place if possible
- Include favorite blankets, toys, or treats
- Speak softly, keep calm, and hold them close if they want you to
- Consider in-home euthanasia services for a more peaceful experience
- Allow time for goodbyes with family (people and pets)
🌿 Aftercare and Grief Support
- Grief is personal. Take the time you need.
- Children and other pets may grieve too—honor their process.
- Reach out for help: we can provide referrals to grief counselors or pet loss support groups.
- Create a memorial, scrapbook, or plant a tree in their honor.
