Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a fatty acid compound that occurs naturally in the human and animal body. PEA acts on the body's endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate pain, inflammation, and immune response. Because it is not a classic cannabinoid, it does not produce psychoactive effects, making it effective for therapeutic use in animals.

Often with chronic disorders, the body does not produce enough PEA which is found in naturally in some foods. Egg yolk, peanuts, soy lecithin, alfalfa, certain varieties of peas and some meats, particularly organ meats are sources. However, the amounts of PEA found in foods are negligible compared to the benefits of a concentrated supplement, to reach therapeutic levels related to pain and inflammation.

For Dogs and Cats

Benefits

Anti-inflammatory:  PEA has been shown to reduce inflammation, making it potentially beneficial for conditions such as osteoarthritis, dermatitis, and other inflammatory diseases common in dogs, cats.

Pain Relief: It can provide analgesic effects, helping to manage chronic pain, particularly from conditions like arthritis.

Neuroprotective Effects: PEA may offer protection against neurodegenerative diseases, benefiting older pets or those with conditions affecting the nervous system.

Palmitoylethanolamide has been researched for many years. Areas of PEA research include:

  • Chronic discomfort of various sources.
  • Cystitis and chronic urinary tract disease.
  • Allergies (itching and skin lesions).
  • Mast cell tumors.
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Dosage and Administration

The correct dosage and the best method of administration should be determined based on the animal's species, size, and the condition being treated. PEA should be administered in food along with a small amount of healthy fats such as coconut oil. Introduce PEA gradually into your pet’s diet. Reduce or discontinue if symptoms of a loose stool or gastric upset become present.
